Spiders And Brambles Pâte De Verre Glass Vase By Gabriel Argy-Rousseau

About the Item

This highly rare and whimsical vase comes from the creative mind of Gabriel Argy-Rousseau, a celebrated Art Nouveau glassware designer and pioneer of the pâte de verre technique. Featuring the molded reliefs of spiders spinning webs amongst tangled red and green brambles, the vase epitomizes growing Art Nouveau fascination with nature and also Argy-Rousseau’s distinctive signature style. Born in 1885, Gabriel Argy-Rousseau entered the Ecole Nationale de Sèvres to study the art of ceramic engineering in 1902. His glassware designs first premiered on the public stage in 1914 at the Exposition des Artistes Française in Paris. Critics praised his originality and his extraordinary talent working with the little-known and little-practiced technique of pâte de verre, a method of casting glass by adding a binder to finely ground glass to create a paste which is then placed into a mold. In 1923, he partnered with a major Paris gallery to found the company Les Pâte de Verre d’Argy-Rousseau and went on to create over 300 models that included vases, lamps, lanterns, and bowls. Argy-Rousseau derived much of his inspiration from nature’s more humble specimens, especially from flowers and insects. The present vase, with its expert use of pâte de verre and clear inspiration from nature, is an exemplary work from Argy-Rousseau’s esteemed oeuvre. Circa 1920 Acid-etched signature “G. Argy-Rousseau” 4 1/2" high by 4 1/2" diameter References: See similar model: G.Argy-Rosseau, Glassware as Art, Thames and Hudson, 1991, byJanine Bloch-Dermant, p. 53-53, plate 20.05
