About the Item

A large faience vase, model 116 F.10, designed by Swedish ceramicist Stig Lindberg for Gustavsberg Studio in the 1940s. A hand-turned urn-shaped vessel with an applied handle, glazed in eggshell white and decorated with a polychrome floral pattern featuring butterflies. The décor was executed by porcelain painter Helinä Pitkänen. Signed underneath with Stig Lindberg’s blue Studio Hand mark, model number, and tulip symbol for painter Helinä Pitkänen. Height 40,5 cm, diameter 20 cm, weight 4.6 kilos. Gustavsberg, founded in 1825 on the island of Värmdö in the Stockholm archipelago, began producing porcelain objects ranging from decorative pieces to everyday ware. In the 1930s, after being acquired by the Swedish Consumer’s Cooperative, the factory underwent major modernization. The Gustavsberg Studio was established in 1942 by Wilhelm Kåge as an experimental workshop offering greater artistic freedom. Stig Lindberg succeeded Kåge as artistic director in 1949, a role he held until 1957. Lindberg became renowned for his playful, graphic style, often infused with humor.
