"Study in Black & Burnt Sienna, " Early Vase, Abstract Pattern by Glidden Parker

About the Item

This early and important vase by Glidden Parker, an important American pioneer in ceramics for the modern home, dates from the 1940s and precedes the lines of homewares that he is most famous for. This piece, unique and striking, is bathed in black and rich, burnt sienna glazes, applied in an abstract manner that anticipates the Abstract Expressionist fine and decorative art that would come to dominate America in the decades to come. His stripped-down, geometric forms for tableware and decorative ware became widely popular in the 1940s and 1950s, influencing ceramic ware in America, Italy and across the world.
