About the Item

This medium-sized küp was used to store grains or olive oil by generations of families in the Levant. Grains were gathered, stored in large clay vessels, and placed in sheds or cisterns, keeping a family’s harvest flavorful and fresh through all seasons. Today, this one-of-a-kind piece makes a stunning centerpiece or design anchor in a modern home, inviting antiquity and abundance into gardens, living rooms, hallways and entryways. This küp is from Urfa, also known as Şanlıurfa: a historic city in southeastern Turkey. Reputed to be the birthplace of Abraham, Urfa is often called the "City of Prophets." The local clay used in Urfa gives many of the pieces a distinct reddish hue. Urfa is famous for its ancient sites, including Göbekli Tepe, the world's oldest known temple complex. *One-of-a-kind and marked by time, each of these pieces will show patina and natural imperfections. From oil stains to oxidation, we consider these alterations to be portals into a time long ago.
