Tall Glass Sommerso Vase by Vicke Lindstrand for Kosta Glass, Sweden Circa 1960

About the Item

This is a mid-century Swedish Scandinavian Mid Century Modern, tall Art glass Sommerso Vase, attributed to the designer Vicke Lindstrand, for the maker Kosta Glass of Sweden, dating to circa 1960. Vicke Lindstrand is considered by many to be one of the most legendary and pioneering of all Swedish Glass designers of all time having worked for Orrefors Glass before going on to become the Artist Director at Kosta Glass in 1950. (See details below) This Sommerso Vase has a lovely tall elegant tapering cylindrical form with a very distinctive shaped design of vertical tapering streaks which start at the base as a black / dark maroon colour and finish at the top in a cranberry colour. This design is very distinctive and decorative. We cannot find any makers markings on this piece. The base shows the expected scratching associated with over 50 years of wear and use. We date this vase to circa 1960 while the designer was working for Kosta Glass. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ PROVENANCE: Viktor (Vicke) Emanuel Lindstrand (1904-1983) After art school, Vicke Lindstrand worked at Orrefors as a designer, where he invented the Ariel technique of glass design, with Edvin Öhrström (Ohrstrom) and Knut Bergkvist. While at Orrefors he experimented with painted or enamelled glass, using just a few colors to strengthen the design. He left Orrefors in 1942 and started work at Uppsala-Ekeby, a ceramics manufacturer, then after about 10 years he started to work for Kosta Glass, Sweden. After leaving Kosta in 1972, he designed glass at the Studio Glashyttan in Åhus and died in 1983.
