Thomas Forester Pair Art Nouveau Vases Painted with Lighthouses

About the Item

A rare and unusual pair art nouveau pottery vases hand painted with lighthouses attributed to Thomas Forester and dating from around 1910. The vases are of carafe shape with a wide squat round body standing on a narrow round unglazed foot with slightly recessed bases. The vases have tall narrow necks widening slightly into a bud shape at the top with simple narrow round openings. Both vases are thickly painted in tones of brown, blue, green and white with lighthouses perched on a rocky outcrop with waves splashing around the bases. The painted scene is continuous around the bodies of the vases and contained within white raised slip outlines. The vases have yellow glazed bases and are indistinctly signed and are impressed 711. The vases are very similar in both structure and design to other pieces made by Thomas Forester at the Phoenix Works in Staffordshire. Provenance: acquired in the British Art Market. In good condition.
