From 1231, Landshut became the residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty and the capital of the Duchy of Bavaria until 1255. Due to the division of Bavarian lands, Landshut alternated between being a capital and a residential town. The town thrived thanks to its location on the Isar River and its strategic positioning along trade routes.
