Vase Unique Piece by Robert Picault before 1962 signed, Vallauris, France

About the Item

This unique piece by Robert Picault (1919-2000) is part of his personal creations that he signed with his name in full. Former student of the School of Applied Arts in Paris, Robert Picault arrived in Vallauris in 1946. With his schoolmates Roger Capron (1922-2006) and Jean Derval (1925-2010), he created the Callis workshop. In 1948, the trio decided to separate, each one taking his independence as a creator. In this village of a hundred potters, they rubbed shoulders with neighboring ceramists André Baud, the 4 potters and among others the Madoura workshop, where he would frequent the famous painter Picasso from 1949 to 1955. He also became friends with Jean Cocteau, Fernand Léger, Louis Aragon and Elsa Triolet. Robert Picault then opened his own workshop (Chemin du Fournas in Vallauris) to produce personal pieces in matte black metalized with animals and women. Thereafter, he produced culinary ceramics, semi-industrial, with simple geometric patterns (round, cross, line..). The glazed pieces are most often bichromate, with copper oxide for the green and iron oxide for the brown. In addition to utilitarian ceramics, Robert Picault has produced unique works on the themes of birds, fish and femininity. The personal pieces are signed in full Picault until 1962. The signature of the industrial pieces is RP in very dark green and RP in pale green after the departure of the ceramist.
