Vintage Italian Bowl in Massive Grey "Sommerso" Murano Glass, Flavio Poli Style
About the Item
The great skills of Murano based artisans shows in many different ways. Some are able blowers, others can freehanded create sculptures and elaborate bowls, and finally some master the technique of glass shaping and polishing. From their hands, some of the most intriguing geometrical Murano pieces are born, including this unusual and highly attractive paperweight (or ashtray) with fourteen facets.
Its peculiar aspect, with a darker tone glass submerged in a cleared one, suggests that this piece might have been designed by celebrated glass designer Flavio Poli, a pioneer of the "Sommerso" techinque - or at least in his style.
It is massive and mesmerising like a prism. It is preserved in good shape, but has some scratches throughout and a visible dent highlighted in the last picture.
