Vintage Mid Century West German Ceramic Vases by Prag Grün for Jopeko, 1960s

About the Item

These Mid-century modern ceramic jugs by Prag Grün for Jopeko Keramik are highly sought after pieces among collectors of vintage ceramics. Hand-produced in West Germany circa the 1960s, these jugs represent a distinctive style characterized by bold, often textured glazes known as "fat lava." The term "fat lava" refers to the thick, flowing glazes used on ceramics during this period, creating vibrant and sometimes surreal patterns. Prag Grün was one of the notable designers associated with Jopeko Keramik, a prominent ceramics manufacturer based in West Germany during the mid-20th century. The jugs produced by Prag Grün typically exhibit sleek and minimalist forms combined with eye-catching lava glazes, reflecting the aesthetic sensibilities of the mid-century modern era. These ceramic jugs are valued not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for their historical significance, representing a period of innovation and creativity in West German design. Collectors often prize them for their unique designs, quality craftsmanship, and cultural significance within the context of mid-century modern decor. Labeled and coded. Measurements: Goblet jug H. 19cm/ 7.5" W. 20cm/ 8" D. 18cm/ 7" Squared jug H. 15cm/ 6" W. 12cm/ 4.75" D. 6cm/ 2.5" "Jopeko was founded in 1948 in the famous pottery town of Ransbach-Baumbach by Johan Peter Korzilius. The family run company is among the few to survive the difficult economic period in the 1970s and continues to make fine ceramics. Headed now by Johann Peter Korzilius IV. Jopeko was one of the leading producers of Fat Lava glazes, and has a decor aptly named lava. The company's most prominent designer was Heinz Martin." From the book: East & West, German Pottery (Fat Lava) by Henrik Aarøe.
