About the Item

Wilhelm Kage studied painting at art school and worked as a poster artist after graduation. As art director of Gustavsberg from 1917, he laid the foundations for modern design in Sweden, Artist who discovered outstanding ceramicists and designers such as Berndt Friberg and Stig Lindberg. The Argenta series was launched at the 1930 Stockholm Expo and produced until the 1980s. The series was a great success both at home and abroad and made the Gustavsberg name world-famous. In the early days, the pieces were produced on the potter's wheel by Sven Jonson and Berndt Friberg and then silver-painted by Wilhelm Kage himself, but gradually painters began to draw from Kage's original drawings, and Kage's recognised painters were given the opportunity to mark their work. Painters who were recognised by Kage were allowed to mark their work. After the war, the factory was forced to rationalise its production and shifted from wheel throwing to casting, and from flintware to stoneware as a material for mass production. This piece was manufactured in 1941. It is wheel-thrown and the silvering is by Gunvor Stoor. The decoration is quite simple in the Argenta series, which has many Art Deco style decorations such as mermaids, dragons, plants and flowers, but there are elaborate jagged scratches on the concentric lines.
