About the Item

This large küp was used to store grains or olive oil by generations of families in the Levant. The barrel-shaped body and small opening at the neck minimize exposure to air, light, and heat, keeping the quality of the oil over time. Olive oil has long been a staple in Turkish pantries, and has brought great economic prosperity to Anatolia. With its large scale, aged patina, concentric rings, and limewashed technique, this one-of-a-kind piece is a stunning centerpiece or design anchor in a modern home, inviting antiquity and abundance into gardens, living rooms, hallways and entryways. The tiny Turkish town of Enez, where this küp is from, is situated on the Aegean coast, on the border of modern-day Turkey and Greece. The Northern Aegean climate and fertile soil of the area provide ideal conditions for olive trees to thrive, making Enez a spring of high-quality olive oil production – and a wealthy transit point between the Black Sea and the Aegean. Late 18th century to early 19th century Enez olive oil pots were made for wealthy clientele in the bustling port region, and coveted by modern collectors for their trademark diamond shape designed to serve both form and function. *One-of-a-kind and marked by time, each of these pieces will show patina and natural imperfections. From oil stains to oxidation, we consider these alterations to be portals into a time long ago.
