About the Item

This monumental ashtray, attributed to the German designer and architect Albin Müller (1871–1941), embodies the refined aesthetics of the Vienna Secession. Crafted in the early 20th century, the piece unites a heavy serpentine stone base with a finely cast bronze bowl. The vessel is supported by a striking winged figure with a sphinx-like head, an allegorical motif that reflects Müller’s fascination with mythological and symbolic forms. Müller, later known as Albinmüller, was a leading figure of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony and one of the most influential designers of his generation. Trained as a cabinetmaker and later active as an architect, professor, and interior designer, he created furniture, metalwork, and architectural elements that bridged Art Nouveau and early modernism. His works often reveal a strong architectural clarity combined with ornamental precision, qualities that can also be seen in this sculptural ashtray. With its impressive weight, monumental character, and rare combination of bronze and serpentine, this ashtray is not merely a utilitarian object but a collector’s piece of early modern design. It stands as a decorative and functional work of art that captures the spirit of Secessionist craftsmanship.
