About the Item
Blue glass ashtray designed by Per Lutken for Holmegaard in Denmark in the 1960s. This piece of glassware has beautiful curves and can also be used as a trinket dish. Slight signs of wear. Per Lutken (1916-1998) was a famous Danish glassmaker who joined Holmegaard in 1942 and worked there until his death. He helped to revive the glassworks, which was then in decline, by bringing his refined and timeless style, which has become a classic of Scandinavian design found in many Danish and Swedish homes. Highly productive, over the decades he created numerous designs that made the glassworks successful in Denmark and around the world. The Holmegaard factory was founded in 1823 in Næstved, south-west of Copenhagen, and began by manufacturing green and brown bottles before turning to art glass. Count Christian Conrad Danneskiold-Samsøe, who had purchased the Holmegaard estate, realised that the local peat could be used as fuel. He therefore asked the King of Denmark for permission to set up a glassworks there, but he died before receiving a reply... It was not until 1825 that his wife, Countess Henriette Danneskiold-Samsøe, received a favourable response from the king. Although a widow and mother of six children, she decided to continue her husband's project and launched the Holmegaard glassworks (Holmegaard Glasværk), which remained in operation until 2008.
