19th Century German Solid Silver Wine Goblet, Hanau, c.1850

About the Item

Antique mid-19th Century German solid silver goblet, made in the style of the early-17th Century examples, which were originaly made in Augsburg and Nuremberg. The piece beautifully embossed with scrolling foliage, panels depicting mythological battle scenes in landscape, the foot applied with protruding lions and the cup with grotesque masks, chased floral boarders, flared rim and doomed foot. Hallmarked with the German Assay mark 13 (812 standard), used in the late 18th to mid 19th century in Prussia and Germany, possibly made by Wolf & Knell. From the middle to the end of the nineteenth century copies of old silver and items designed in an amalgamation of historic styles, satisfied customer demand and preference. Many firms in Europe and in the United States produced this type of silver. With the demand for antique style silver in the 19th century, Hanau silversmiths quickly found a market niche, which brought its silver manufacturers enormous prosperity and worldwide reputation.
