Antique Swedish Silver Peg Tankard

A magnificent, fine and impressive, large antique Swedish silver quart tankard; an addition to our range of collectable silverware This magnificent and large antique Swedish silver tankard has a plain cylindrical form onto three feet, in the classic 17th century pegged tankard style. The surface of the tankard is plain and unembellished with an applied bead decorated border to the rim. This antique Swedish silver tankard retains the original hallmarked domed hinged cover encircled with an impressive chased decorated tied oak leaf festoon to the convex rounded rim. The surface of the cover is further embellished with a broad band of exceptional chased strapwork ornamentation, incorporating floral, scrolling leaf and mask designs. The upper plateau of the cover features an impressive Swedish memorial coin; the coin bears the portrait of Frederick I wearing wig, mantle and cuirass and Ulrika Eleonora wearing gala dress, and is signed 'FRIDERIC ET ULRICA EL.D.G.REX ET REG.SVEC.' This quart tankard is fitted with a S scroll handle with an impressive shield shaped terminal in addition to a large bulbous thumbpiece to the upper portion. The broad handpiece is ornamented with cast and applied strapwork decoration, incorporating a mask design to the upper portion, all on a matte background. The imposing cast silver thumbpiece is embellished with further strapwork and mask ornamentation, incorporating large scrolling leaf designs. This impressive tankard is supported by three cast and applied silver spherical feet, reflecting the same design as that of the thumbpiece. Each foot conjoins the body via a large symmetrical strapwork design, displaying the style ornamentation to the feet and thumbpiece. The interior of the tankard retains the original gilding. The hallmarks to the body and cover of this impressive tankard include: Maker's mark: MÖLLENBORG/GM (Gustaf Möllenborg) National mark: Three Crowns National mark (Swedish) Town mark: Crowned Head (Stockholm) Date mark: U6 (1898) NOTE: The name 'peg tankard' is derived from a vertical row of pegs/convex notches to the interior of the body, used to measure how much alcohol was drunk as the piece was passed around a table. This impressive example of antique silverware reflects the shape and design of a peg tankard, however bears a smooth interior. Condition This antique Swedish silver tankard is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition. The cast and chased decoration is all very sharp. The Swedish hallmarks struck to the underside of the tankard and sleeve of the cover are all very clear. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this magnificent and large antique silver pegged tankard. A magnificent, fine and impressive antique William III English Britannia standard silver flat topped quart tankard; an addition to our range of collectable 18th century silverware. This magnificent antique William III Britannia silver tankard has a plain tapering cylindrical form onto a spreading collet style foot. The surface of this 18th century quart tankard is embellished with an impressive engraved leaf and floral bordered coat of arms depicting party per pale to the first a chevron between three lion's heads erased and to the second a bend raguly. The upper and lower portions of the body are encircled with bands of tooled decoration, with an applied moulded border to the upper rim. This antique quart tankard retains the original double stepped flat topped, hallmarked cover surmounted with an impressive volute scrolling thumbpiece. The cover is further ornamented with a band of tooled decoration to the rim accented with an applied shaped thumbpiece to the anterior edge. The hinge is decorated with ribbed ornamentation and retains the original pin. This antique Britannia standard silver tankard is fitted with an S-scroll handle ornamented with a plain rounded terminal. The spreading collet foot is encircled with a band of applied moulded decoration to the rim. Imperial quart = 2 pints/1.14 litres. Britannia silver - The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver). The armourial bearings are those of the Wyndham and Penruddocke family, to commemorate the marriage of Henry Wyndham and Arundel Penruddocke on 11th September 1735.
