DESIGNER:
Josef Hoffmann (1870 - 1956) had studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Karl Freiherr von Hasenauer and Otto Wagner, graduating with a Prix de Rome in 1895. During his career, Hoffmann learned to know Joseph Maria Olbrich, Gustav Klimt and Koloman Moser (the mentioned artists founded the Vienna Secession in 1897). In the year 1903 the Wiener Werkstaette was founded - with the financial help of the banker Fritz Waerndorfer - so that Josef Hoffmann designed many items on behalf of the Wiener Werkstaette, particularly furniture pieces (for example the famous 'Sitzmaschine') and silver & glass items. - In 1906, Hoffmann - being active as architect - created his first great work of architecture: the Sanatorium Purkersdorf. This building was a great advancement towards abstraction and a move away from traditional Arts and Crafts and historicism. It was a great step towards modern architecture, having been further developped during the first half of the 20th century, for instance by the early work of Le Corbusier: The clear and simple forms prepared the way to the Neue Sachlichkeit. - Hoffmann's second great work as architect was the construction of the Palais Stoclet in Brussels from 1905 to 1911 which is a great work of art (the dining room was staffed with murals by Gustav Klimt). In 1907, Hoffmann was co-founder of the Deutscher Werkbund as well as in 1912 of the Österreichischer Werkbund. After World War II, he took on official tasks, that of an Austrian general commissioner with the Venice Biennale and a membership in the art senate. (WIKIPEDIA)
