About the Item

Charming and whimsical, this Art Deco silver-plated cocktail shaker takes the form of a stylized slide trombone. In the glamorous "Roaring Twenties," new musical styles including jazz, blues and ragtime were reaching grand heights of popularity. Instruments like the trombone were an essential part of the upbeat and syncopated rhythms that kept the nightclubs of the era dancing. Originally manufactured by Napier, USA for Alfred Dunhill of London, the shaker's cover and fitted pump are analogous to the trombone's "mouthpiece," while its spout forms the slide. Pumping the mouthpiece allows the cocktail to be mixed thoroughly, while the swiveling slide dispenses the perfect pour. circa 1925 Stamped "Napier / Pat.Pend." and "Dunhill, London" on base Measures: 15 1/4" high x 4 3/8" diameter.

1930s Napier Silver-Plate Cocktail Shaker Designed by Emil Schuelke
By Emil Schuelke
Located in Minneapolis, MN
Here is a hard-to-find modernist silver-plate cocktail shaker designer by Emil Schuelke in the mid-1930s and made by Napier Company of Meriden, Connecticut. The cone-shaped shaker consists of two pieces--the top can be used for measuring ingredients. This example is in good condition--there are no deep scratches or dents. There some silver losses on the body and top of the shaker and the inside strainer has loss as well. You can tell the shaker has been used--there is wear to the interior. We've included several photos which represent the condition well. But all in all, this shaker presents nicely and would make a great addition to any bar or cocktail shaker collection. From Wikipedia: "Napier silver designs from the first half of the 20th century are in museum collections including the Brooklyn Museum, Newark Museum and a substantial collection at the Dallas Museum of Art. Over the years, Napier silver has been featured in museum exhibitions, including Modernism in American Silver: 20th Century Design at the Smithsonian in Washington, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Wolfsonian in Miami Beach, the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, and the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis, TN (2005–07). Napier designs have also been included in two shows at the Brooklyn Museum, entitled 19th century Modern (2011–12; 2013–15). In November 2016-November 2017, the iconic Napier penguin cocktail shaker...
