Chinese Export Porcelain Set of Graduated Famille RoseTankards

Chinese export porcelain set of graduated famille rose mugs or tankards, Circa 1780 The Chinese Export porcelain tankards or mugs are each enameled with a neoclassic urn design with flowers within a think green enamel circular circle. The rim with an encircling gilt diaper band with overlapping floral swags. The handles are a double-loop design with large floral terminals. On each side in the center is a circular grouping of fruits and flowers. Dimensions: Smallest: 4 3/4 inches high x 6 inches wide x 3 3/4 inches deep, Center: 5 1/2 inches x 6 inches wide x 4 1/4 inches deep and Largest: 6 1/4 inches high x 7 inches wide x 4 3/4 inches deep (12.07cm high x 13.97 diameter x 15.88cm wide). This form is today referred to as a tankard but in the 18th century was called a mug.

The Chinese Export porcelain mug is modeled after a Derby porcelain original as the head of Bacchus, the face naturalistically & delicately enameled. The eyebrows, beard and hair picked out with lightly etched brown lines. Around his head is a garland of vine leaves enameled in green, the veins of the leaves well delineated in grey, the bunches of grapes in a rich purple. The "C" shaped handle is decorated with stylized vine leaves, the sides of the thick handle with gold lappets. Dimensions: 4 inches high x 5 1/4 inches wide x 3 1/2 inches deep Reference This type of mug was copied directly from a Derby original that dates to around 1780-1785 and was created by William Duesbury II (1763-97) when the company was known as William Duesbury & Co.
