Decorative English Glass Bottle and White Stone Tantalus for Liquor
A Betjemann's Patent Tantalus Constructed in a white banded agate, and having engraved gilt bronze mounts; of rectangular form, the cavetto base dressed with gilt bronze clasps at the angles, having three circular cut lead glass bottles, with faceted stoppers housed within; the bronze security bar having a shaped loop handle, protected by a Brahmah lock, number 8192, bearing a plaque to the front, identifying it as a gift to Viscountess Folkestone, circa 1870. George Betjemann & Sons, Pentonville Road London George Betjemann (1798-1886), the great grandfather of Sir John Betjemann, the Poet Laureate and broadcaster, was apprenticed to Gilbert Slater, a dressing case maker in 1810, and established himself as a dressing case manufacturer, initially in Clerkenwell, and later in 1859, in the Pentonville Road, where his substantial business employed 119 people having expanded into making and selling writing case, tantalus sets and tobacco cabinets, inter alia. Viscountess Folkestone (1815-1879), (later Countess of Radnor in 1872) was the most noted aristocratic philanthropist of her day, espousing the Rights of Women, and the less privileged members of English Society.
