About the Item

Pair of Early Daum Nancy Gilt and Wheel-Cut Crystal Decanters, Circa 1880–1895 This elegant pair of signed Daum Nancy decanters dates to the firm's early production period, circa 1880–1895, a time when the celebrated French glassmaker was producing refined crystal tableware influenced by neoclassical and Georgian design traditions. Crafted in clear crystal and decorated with hand-applied parcel gilt, the decanters feature rectilinear forms with rounded shoulders and deep wheel-cut starburst motifs, echoing the proportions and engraving techniques of late Georgian English spirit decanters. The dramatic stoppers—cut in the form of eight-pointed stars and highlighted in gold—are original and emblematic of the period’s balance between sculptural clarity and ornamentation. These works reflect a transitional moment in Daum’s history, prior to the company’s embrace of Art Nouveau experimentation. During this early phase, Daum produced functional yet luxurious wares for the French and international markets, often incorporating English and Bohemian forms while refining them with French gilt decoration and polished execution. Each decanter is signed Daum Nancy with the Cross of Lorraine in gold script on the base, confirming its authenticity and origin. Together, the pair represents a rare survival of Daum’s academically influenced glassmaking—bridging classical symmetry and emerging decorative sophistication.
