Pair of French Wine Barrel Facades, “Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges”, 1900s
About the Item
Originally parts of French oak wine barrels, dating to at least the 1950s (possibly older), this pair of wine barrel heads have been repurposed into facades that are perfect accessories for a bar area or wine room. Both facades have been painted more recently with the appellations of a wine vineyard known as Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges, located in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of eastern France. Additional painted designations indicate particular bottles of the vineyard.
The slightly larger front has a “5” painted beneath the vineyard name and is comprised of tan wood with black lettering. There is a brown production mark (put de tradition Francaise) encircling the spout hole with an oak leaf cluster. The edge is bound by two black iron straps and two rings of wooden sprigs. Similarly, the façade with a “7” under the vineyard name is secured by a pair of iron straps accompanied by two stems that have been wrapped around the circumference. This barrel head has an ashy gray hue with a similarly colored fill to the spout hole. Both of the backs have a visible red tint from years of absorbing wine sediment, making our pair of wine barrel facades charming additions to a kitchen, wine cellar, or bar area.

The painted letters on the front are more recent, added at the time that the heads were removed from the main bodies. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Good condition. Wine barrel heads from 1950s, maybe earlier. Commensurate wear, including minor nicks, losses, and wood separations. Very light rubs and metal oxidation. Visible wine sediments (red tint) on backs. Taphole on barrel 7 has been filled.
