Rookwood Art Nouveau Craftsman Silver Overlay Corn Whiskey Jug

About the Item

Art Nouveau Craftsman glazed earthenware whiskey jug with engraved silver overlay. Made by Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati in 1893. Globular with short neck; silver collar round mouth with lip spout flowing into c-scroll handle. Painted ear of corn with exposed kernels on shaded brown green ground. Overlay in form of entwined grapevine and berry branches with succulent fruit and outsized leaves. The painter was Harriette Rosemary Strafer (1873-1935), who began working at Rookwood Pottery in 1890, when she was in her late teens. She remained there until 1899, when she left for New York. Her work has been exhibited at the Morse Museum. An accomplished homage to fermented beverages of the homemade sort by a young lady just turned twenty. Fully marked including dated Rookwood stamp, painter’s initials, shape no. 869, and glaze letter W. Silver has Gorham maker’s stamp and no. R1171.
