Royal Silver Gilt Wine Trolleys by Smith and Garrard

About the Item

Works of Royal provenance crafted by two of the most celebrated silversmiths of the 19th century, this stunning pair of wine trolleys bear the coat of arms and ducal coronet of the sons of King George III, with coasters crafted by Benjamin Smith and trolley bases created by Robert Garrard II. The coasters, which bear the full hallmark of Smith with the date letter for 1808, are detachable from their later trolley bases, which are hallmarked by Garrard and date to the 1830s. The entire set, including the wheels, is crafted in an incredibly intricate grapevine motif boasting beautiful pierced and chased elements that put the full gifts of each silversmith on display. Executed by two of the greatest silversmiths of their respective times and bearing the arms and ducal coronet of George III’s sons, these trolleys exude grandeur and royalty. Renowned for his rapidly changing partnerships as much as for his artistry, Benjamin Smith worked with some of the best craftsmen of the era, including Paul Storr, Matthew Boulton, and Digby Scott, after whom Smith named his third son. He produced many royal commissions for Royal Goldsmiths Rundell, Bridge, and Rundell, the most important work arguably being the Jamaica Service of 1803, now housed in the Royal Collection. However, he did not limit his talents to his partnerships, as evidenced by the elegance of these coasters that bear his hallmark. The son of Robert Garrard Senior, Goldsmith and Jeweler to His Majesty George III, Robert Garrard II, and his brothers, James and Sebastian succeeded their father in running the company, trading as R., J., & S. Garrard (or Robert Garrard & Brothers) until James’ retirement in 1835, when the company became R & S Garrard. In 1843, the firm was appointed to the position of Crown Jewelers by Queen Victoria, an honor which led to the production of numerous pieces of silverware and jewelry for the Royal Family, as well as the upkeep of the Crown Jewels. A superb example of Georgian silver, these trolleys beautifully demonstrate Garrard’s skill and artistry.
