About the Item
Elegant egg-shaped covered sugar bowl in solid silver, resting on a circular pedestal, with a domed lid adorned with a stylized seed handle. The side handles, finely chiseled with palmettes and rosettes on a matte background, reflect a decorative repertoire typical of the neo-Pompeian style during the Empire. This piece was executed entirely by hammer. The second rooster mark attests to its manufacture between 1809 and 1818.
This work is by Jean-Baptiste Claude Odiot, one of the most prestigious Parisian goldsmiths of the First Empire, a renowned supplier to the Imperial Court and numerous European courts. He succeeded his father and promoted French goldsmithing through creations combining architectural rigor and ornamental richness, often inspired by Antiquity.
