A Long Antique French Double Butcher Block Table, Billot de Boucher, Circa 1900

About the Item

Known in France as a billot de boucher, this long, double butcher block dates to circa 1900. This is a stunning example with a crenellated apron and high rising back wall that softens the overall linear composition. Supported by six tapering spindle legs (three in the front and three in the back), the robust chopping surface stands 32 ½ inches tall. A raised lozenge has been carved over each front leg, also flanking the two amply spaced belt drawers. The shapely back wall has a long, raised ridge that is segmented into three sections, capable of storing knives, tongs, and other kitchen implements. A pair of exposed nail heads can be seen on each of the crests of the back wall, allowing for hanging of certain utensils or towels. The chopping surface has an additional four slots for housing various utensils, making this a very practical option for a kitchen island or prep station.

Antique French Brass Hunting Horn, "Le Cor de Chasse", Early 1900s
Located in Dallas, TX
An ancestor of modern orchestral horns, this le cor de chasse, or hunting horn, would have been carried by a member of a fox or stag hunting party known as the huntsman. Unlike orchestral horns, this brass version is valveless, relying on the skill of the huntsman to manipulate pitch through delicate adjustments of the lips. By varying the frequency of notes, as well as the pitch and duration, the huntsman would produce different signals to alert members of the hunting party or to relay commands to the hounds. Horns such as these (cor à plusieurs tours) that feature distinctive tight coils and a soldered mouthpiece were designed to be played with one hand while on horseback.
