Antique Silver Steeple Cup Lidded Cup & Cover 1902 17th Century Style

About the Item

A magnificent Antique Sterling Silver Steeple Cup in the style of the original steeple cups of the early 1600s. The Cup is embellished with rich, detailed chased designs. The Cup has a central band is a frieze engraved with a classical chariot race. This detailed frieze is complemented by ornate bands on the lid, body and foot of the Cup showing patterns of shells, foliate designs and other patterns. The lid of the Cup is embellished with a tall 'steeple' finial from which the Steeple Cup name derives. Made in London in 1902 by Garrard & Co. Approx. Weight - 2854g / 91.77oz Approx.Height - 59.5cm Approx. Diameter - 21.1cm This Antique Steeple Cup has full English Hallmarks on the body and is part marked on the lid and foot. This exceptional antique Edwardian sterling silver presentation cup & cover has a campania shaped form onto a circular spreading pedestal foot. The lower bulbous portion of body is encircled with chased fluted ornamentation. Either side of the plain upper portion of the body of this cup is embellished with an exceptional and large applied ribbon tied laurel branch wreath, replicating the border of a Classic cartouche. This impressive presentation cup retains the original hallmarked cover surmounted with an exceptional, Fine and impressive sterling silver overlapping leaf, bead and bud style finial. The rim of the cover is encompassed with an impressive applied egg and dart decorated border. This antique cup and cover is fitted with two very impressive handles modelled in the form of conjoined snakes, above a figural mask and Caduceus*.     A spectacular set of three silver trophy cups in the George III style, one larger and a pair of smaller. Each has a removable lid with hand-chased acanthus leaf detail, a decoration which is also found round the bodies, and cast finial. The handles are realistically cast as sinuously entwined snakes, the heads of which are holding rings that appear to be supporting hand-chased drapes that hang round the body of each cup.
