About
Majolica by George Jones is the quintessential collector's dream. This particular compote is one of a series of lily Pad that starts out as plates, then raised rim, then short pedestal then this pedestal version. All the pieces related to complete a set. George was not from a pottery family but at the age of fourteen, he apprenticed at Minton. He understood quality even then. By 1850 George established himself as a potter and by 1856 opened up his showroom in Stoke, England. By 1861, he began manufacturing his wares. By 1865 he built a new factory on land purchased from a Minton descendant and he produced under the name Trent Potteries. This started the Majolica ware production. By 1872 He was producing china. His sons joined him and formed George Jones and Sons in 1873. The crescent mark was registered then. They employed 600 people. George Jones died in 1893. It had several transformations until 1957 when it ceased operations and the factory was demolished.
This pedestal dish id quintessential George Jones not only is it a pedestal but the pedestal is supported by a flower. The delicacy of this piece and its Minto genetics is apparent. Inspect the photos and understand why you must have a George Jones piece in your collection. This is a clean piece.
