About the Item

Full-Size George Jones Majolica Cow Cheese dome and stand (Stilton Dish), 11.75 height x 12.5 diameter inches, on a vivid deep pink glazed ground with strong lavender hues, with stylized acanthus leaves glazed in varying shades of green, with yellow glazed roping trim, surmounted by a recumbent cow forming the handle. Painted pattern number to reserve on bottom, '2200,' which corresponds to 'Stilton Dish, Full Size, Pink Ground, Cow Finial' in the George Jones Majolica Pattern Numbers Books preserved in the Wedgwood Archives of the Wedgwood Museum, Barlaston, England and reprinted in R. Cluett's "George Jones Ceramics" * see footnote. For 30 years we have been among the world's preeminent specialists in the finest antique majolica. As Victoria Bergesen points out in her important work, "Majolica," "The majolica of George Jones vies with that of Minton and Wedgwood for the place of the best majolica ever produced" **see footnote.
