About the Item

Silver Epergne Joseph Preedy Hallmarked London, 1801 It is a time-honored tradition to give a loved one a gift that, in size or grandeur, reflects the depth of affection and gratitude for their role in our lives. This monumental epergne was commissioned to embody just that sentiment—from a grateful regiment to its esteemed leader. During the American War of Independence, Thomas Lister, Lord Ribblesdale of Gisburn Park, founded the Craven Legion, a regiment that continuously fought for Britain, leaving a legacy of resilience and valor. Together, the grateful regiment funded the commission of this remarkable epergne—grand in both size and design. Crafted by the famed Joseph Preedy, it is expertly fashioned from 21 pounds of sterling silver and gilding, featuring seven cut glass bowls with intricate Bacchanalian designs, including satyrs, grapes and flowers. Hallmarked 1801, the epergne bears an inscription that reads, “To Their most respected Colonel the Rt Honble Thomas Lord Ribblesdale, The Officers of The Craven Legion unanimously present This Token of Their Warmest Gratitude & Attachment 4th June 1805.” This epergne which serves as a magnificent centerpiece not only exemplifies Preedy's masterful craftsmanship as one of the most distinguished English silversmiths but also commemorates the profound respect and admiration held for Lord Ribblesdale. 19 3/4“ tall x 36” wide x 28 1/2“ deep Provenance: Thomas Lister, Lord Ribblesdale M.S.
