About the Item

A Magnificent 19th Century Grand Tour Hand-Carved Italian Double Bronze-Handled Centerpiece with Fluted Body. The bowl is carved from a single piece of breccia, characterized by its variegated patterning of cream, burgundy, and grey veining. The use of this distinctively patterned stone, along with the quality of carving, suggests Italian origin. The integration of the bronze handles into the marble body, without visible fasteners on the exterior, indicates precision workmanship. The centerpiece is shaped in a fluted, deep square-sectioned basin, tapering to a gadrooned lower body that transitions into a waisted socle. The basin is raised on a flaring, fluted pedestal stem, which continues into a square plinth base with stepped edges. The broad lip is flat and molded, with sharp corners and inset curved terminals that visually echo the form of the handles. The interior of the bowl is smoothly polished and shallowly recessed with lobed inner edges carved directly into the stone. This form is derived from ancient Roman krater vessels, and was popularized during the Italian Grand Tour period. The use of Italian breccia marble—particularly one combining cream, ochre, and violet fragments—was common in Florentine and Roman workshops specializing in ornamental stonework. The patinated bronze handles are shaped in C-scrolls and affixed at the midpoint of the body, consistent with decorative bronzes of the period. The quality and type of marble suggest that this piece was produced by a workshop specializing in hardstone carving for decorative display during the 1800s. Italy, Circa: 1850
