About the Item

Very fine pair of antique Renaissance Style surtout de table Magnum sized wine coasters in gilt and silvered bronze with mirrored plateaus. Each with a finely wrought filigree border of intricately scrolled designs accenting eight classical portrait profiles. This rare pair of centerpieces would have been proudly used to display the finest wine bottles offered by a host. The unusual combination of gilt and silvered surface finishes complements and unites gilt and silver tableware on display at a banquet table. The choice of subject, Renaissance motifs with classical male profiles, references the times of grand entertainments when a sumptuous table presentation was as important as the delicacies and libations it held. Condition: Excellent, commensurate with age, original mirrors with beautiful silver leaf surface variation from within and light surface wear, original lovely faded velvet backing on the underside as shown in photos. Measures: 1 7/8 inches high 9 inches diameter 6.75 inches mirror surface diameter.
