Antique Indian Colonial Solid Silver Trophy Cup and Cover, Gordon & Co
Located in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent
Antique 19th Century unique and exceptional Indian Colonial solid silver presentation trophy cup and cover, the massive campana-shaped body on a circular stepped foot chased with flowers and scrolling foliage, the body chased with a band of trailing vine on a matted background, the lower part also chased with scrolling leaves incorporating elephant and tiger's heads, extremely fine, crisp and detailed. The body is applied with large double-scroll handles surmounted by tigers, the interior is richly gilded, the matching cover is also chased with scrolling foliage in relief and surmounted by a massive cast finial modelled as a horse. The design is unique and original, as mixes elements of the cups made in the Regency period by royal silversmiths such as Paul Storr, Benjamin Smith and Robert Garrard with elements derived from the Indian culture, such as elephants, tigers and other animals, very naturalistically modelled. The cup was made to be presented as a trophy for a horse race held in Bangalore in 1832. One side bearing the original inscription "This Cup value 1000 Rupees was given by the Officers of the 7th Light Cavalry to be run for the BANGALORE Races in November 1832 Free for all Arab Horses weight for Age and Inches, 14 Hands and Aged_Carrying_8 Stone_10 lbs_Heats_2 Miles Won by Beating", on the other side a later presentation inscription, relating to George VI's coronation: "This Cup was run for again in Madras on December 15th 1937 To Commemorate The Coronation of King George the Sixth Won by "Old Fogey" The property of the Lady Marjorie Erskine". The base bearing the Hallmark "GG&Co" for George Gordon & Co, one of the most important dynasty of silversmiths active in Madras since the early 19th Century (see Wilkinson 1987, p.71. George Gordon was later under the partnership of Peter Orr...

Large Basket in Paris Porcelain resting on two cupids
Located in Paris, FR
Very large navette-shaped basket in white openwork porcelain with gold highlights, resting on two kneeling cupids carrying their quivers, on a base of the same shape and standing on claw or lion's paw feet. The oblong base is decorated on both sides with a mask in a central medallion and foliage ending in palmettes. This piece is said to be made in Paris porcelain. What is Porcelaine de Paris? The history of Parisian porcelain began late in the 18th century, in the 1770s, when Limousin kaolin was commercialised and the monopoly on porcelain manufacture that protected the royal Sèvres factory was violated. The French Revolution contributed to the proliferation of factories definitively freed from the Sèvres monopoly. Most of these factories were short-lived. They suffered from the economic crises of the Napoleonic wars. Despite these difficulties, Parisian porcelain manufacturers reached their peak in the 1820s. Thereafter, their numbers declined steadily, as the hope of making a lot of money from porcelain was dashed. Hence the closure of factories or their relocation to the provinces. That's why it's consistent to call hard, unmarked porcelain...
