About the Item

Made in England circa 1890 by Walker & Hall of Sheffield, this antique silver plated gong is mounted on a polished oak base and supported by a pair of natural cow horn uprights with silver plated mounts. The circular gong hangs from a chain between the horns, and the original striker is present, with a turned wooden handle and padded head. The combination of organic and polished materials—cow horn, oak, and silver plate—reflects a late Victorian sensibility for bold contrasts and decorative utility. The form is well-balanced and sculptural, with a strong presence whether in use or on display. Walker & Hall were among the leading silversmiths and electroplaters of their period, producing a broad range of domestic and presentation wares. This example is typical of their work at the end of the 19th century, combining traditional craftsmanship with an eye for theatrical design. Dimensions: H 12 in. (30 cm) × W 15.25 in.
