About the Item

Attractive 20th Dynasty turquoise-glazed faience offering cup inscribed with the cartouche of the highly important Pharaoh Ramesses III, son of Setnakhte and Queen Tiy. Ramesses III is considered the last great temple builders of the New Kingdom. He is also known for his victory over the Sea Peoples in Palestine and the Libyans, and for helping complete the unification of Egypt and providing much needed economic and political stability for much of his long reign. He built important additions to the temples at Luxor and Karnak, and his funerary temple and administrative complex at Medinet-Habu is amongst the largest and best-preserved in Egypt. Large Osirid statues of Ramses III greet visitors today at his temple in Karnak (in the first courtyard of the Great Temple of Amun). The vessel has a cylindrical body with a deep reservoir and thick walls, with slightly squared offset lip and flattened underside. The bright turquoise glaze covers the entire outer surface of the cup including the underside while the interior remains unglazed. Two columns of hieroglyphs in black read: “beloved of Osiris, Lord of Rostjau, Lord of Two Lands User-maat-re-mery-Amun.” The color turquoise symbolized resurrection and rebirth. Intact with tiny chip to inside of rim, strong color, and hieroglyphics nicely preserved. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Charles Alfred Baer of France (born 1896) who assembled his collection between 1950-1970.
