About the Item

This exquisite antique porcelain plate features a vivid hand-painted equestrian scene, showing a fox hunter galloping across a country landscape, hounds running ahead. It embodies a rich narrative of culture, artistry, and history. Made by Derby around 1815, the elegant composition is attributed to William Cotton, known for his dynamic portrayals of English sporting life. The scene captures the thrill of the chase, with the rider in a vivid red coat and the landscape bathed in early morning light beneath a lavender-tinted sky. A gilt border frames the painting, enclosed within a second impressed basketweave border around the rim. The imagery likely draws from Samuel Howitt’s color plates in The British Sportsman (published by Edward Orme, London, 1812), a celebrated source for Regency-era hunting scenes. Dimensions: 8.5 inches in diameter Condition: Excellent Price: $480 ** Key Features **  - Hand-painted equestrian fox hunting scene  - Made by Derby, England, circa 1815  - Attributed to William Cotton  - Inspired by *The British Sportsman* by Samuel Howitt  - Double border with impressed basketweave design  - Vivid early 19th-century English sporting art  Background of Derby Porcelain Derby porcelain boasts a rich history, with its earliest production dating back to the first half of the 18th century. The foundation of the iconic Derby factory was laid in 1756 by William Duesbury, alongside Andrew Planche and John Heath, leading to a legacy of artistry recognized with the royal distinction of becoming Royal Crown Derby, granted by King George III. The first documented mention of the Derby factory in December 1756 highlights its immediate prominence, capturing attention through an advertisement in the Public Advertiser promoting an auction in London, underscoring its esteemed heritage.
