FOUR 17th Century Delft Blue and White Wall Tiles on Frame Set 2, Netherlands
About the Item
These are Four Delft ceramic wall tiles mounted on a modern wood frame, all with a blue and white hand painted flower pattern, made in the Netherlands during the 17th century, circa 1680.
Each tile is nominally 5 inches square with the display being about 10.25 inches square.
The tiles are attached to the wood frame with a grouting cement type material. The frame is modern and made of plywood with a cut-away section at the rear showing the base of the tiles. The frame has a metal hanging bracket.
All four tiles are unique, being individually hand painted with similar but different patterns featuring a stylised flower pattern with a flying insect or butterfly to three of them. All four tiles are enamelled in cobalt blue, using different shades of blue, which varies slightly from tile to tile as expected:- please see the images.
Notes: On Delft Tiles
In the second half of the 17th century, the city of Delft became the centre of production for high-quality tin glazed earthenware. The earthenware industry disappeared from most Dutch cities, though tile factories managed to survive in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Utrecht. Tile and plate production continued in the northern province of Friesland, more specifically in the towns of Harlingen and Makkum.
