Four jugs with ceramic basins

About the Item

The four jugs with their respective basins make up a homogeneous and visually very pleasing group as a whole, despite the fact that they do not share a common geographical origin. Two of them can clearly be recognized as Faentine, with moldings and wavy ovoid basins echoing their shapes. Of these: one is a typical monochrome Faenza white pottery; the other is polychrome, with floral decorations that include the characteristic Faenza carnation. The latter is intact but has some chipping, while two failures can be seen on the basin. It should be noted that Faenza pottery is among the most renowned in the world (in fact, in France the term "faïence" is used to refer to majolica). A third carafe, on the other hand, is of Milanese manufacture, decorated with splendid floral motifs and images of landscapes, architecture and cherubs. The restoration that has been done on this pitcher does not compromise its beauty and charm. Finally, the last jug is French and specifically was probably produced in the Moustiers Furnace. The pitcher and basin are made of ochre decorated majolica and are in good condition. These jugs are special objects in that they can be traced back to a typical practice in the 18th century. In fact, when guests were present, the waiter used to reach them with a pitcher containing water and his bowl so that they could wipe their hands. The rarity of the group lies in the great difficulty in finding the bowl and jug together. Generally you can recover either one or the other. A group of four jugs with all their respective basins may well be considered something exceptional.
