About the Item
This is an exquisite Porcelain Coffee can made by the Derby factory, in the reign of George 111 in the early 19th Century, circa 1815
.
Straight sided coffee cans were only made for about the first 20 years of the 19th Century and are very collectable.
The can is well potted with a nominal cylindrical shape having a handle style known as "Grecian" with an upper thumb rest.
The can is finely hand decorated in the pattern 165, having two shades of carmine and gold with the Derby scroll pattern, with a fancy gold gilded border below. The pattern is also hand painted deep into the inside of the can in the same pattern. There is a circular ring in gold just above the base and the outer handle also has gold gilded detail.
A coffee can in this pattern is illustrated on page 284 of the book: Derby porcelain 1748 1848 by John Twitchett , published by The Antique Collectors' Club.
The can has the Derby Crown and cross batons mark, hand painted in red to the base, together with a painter or gilders mark at the rim.
