Georgian, New Hall, Coffee Can, Porcelain, Hand-Painted Pattern, circa 1805
This is a beautifully hand-painted English coffee can, from the late George-III period, of the very early 19th century, circa 1805. This coffee can is nominally straight sided with a plain loop handle having fairly rounded attachments. The pattern depicts a trailing vine with feathery leaves and grapes, all having superb detail. There is good hand gilded detail to the leaves and branches , upper rim and lower base rim border. The pattern is also painted to the upper half of the inside of the can. The identification of these unmarked coffee cans is difficult but we attribute this can to New Hall, mainly because of the handle shape, style and dimensions and consider it to be pattern no. 446 - please see the China cupboard web site where a New Hall coffee can with this pattern is illustrated. Most of the manufacturers of this period copied other makers patterns and often made replacement pieces for their clients. This coffee can has a hand-painted one to the base which is probably the painters mark.
