Art Deco Figure, Harlequin with Flute by Josef Kostial, Goldscheider Vienna
By Goldscheider Manufactory of Vienna
Located in Vienna, AT
Very rare Art Deco Goldscheider ceramic figure of the 1920s.
Depiction of Till Eulenspiegel in a uniform costume with brown ribbons, framed by a black zigzag pattern, with matching shoes, a large ruff and a brown fool's cap, leaning on a pedestal covered with a colored cloth and playing a flute.
On a black oval base with the artist's signature 'Kostial' on the back of the pedestal.
Originally from Germany, Till Eulenspiegel allegedly lived as a wandering rogue in the 14th century, born around 1300 in Kneitlingen near Brunswick. He traveled around the Holy Roman Empire and other parts of Europe, as a country traveler he became the protagonist of a Middle Low German collection of swans, which was first published by a Strasbourg publisher without naming an author long after his death around 1510. In later illustrations, the fool's cap became his most important attribute and distinguishing mark, often with 'Donkey ears' and / or bells occupied.
'Eulenspiegel' made his main entrance in English- speaking culture late in the 19th century as 'Owlglass', but was first mentioned in English literature by Ben Jonson in his comedic play The Alchemist.
