John Calver Multiple Glaze Trailed Studio Pottery Pedestal Dish

About the Item

A stylish and well-made studio pottery pedestal dish decorated in multiple glazes by renowned Lancashire based potter John Calver and dating from the 20th or early 21st century. John has been making stoneware pottery in the North Lancashire village of Yealand Redmayne for forty years. The firing process requires a temperature of 1320c, and a smoky/reducing atmosphere in the kiln, which results in rich glaze colours and exciting unpredictable effects on the pots. Most of the pots are classically simple functional shapes, thrown on the wheel, but John occasionally alters the freshly thrown pots to produce one of the signature forms for which he is well known. This dish stands raised on a narrow-rounded pedestal base with an unglazed foot with a ribbed patterning to the outer dish and with a square shaped shallow wide bowl top with a shaped rim. The bowl is decorated in multiple glazes giving a colorful and very stylish effect of stylized trailing stems and seed pods. Using tones of red, green blue and brown against a matted brown ground with red and white glazes applied around the underside of the dish. The dish has a painted signature mark to the base. Provenance: from the collection of a private gentleman and originating from the UK art market. In good condition.

Stylish Pair Graduated Brown Glazed Studio Pottery Moon Vases
Located in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire
A very well made and stylish pair graduated studio pottery moon vases believed to date from the 20th century and probably originating from the UK. The stoneware vases are lightly potted standing on flat narrow oval shaped bases and both are hand crafted in narrow round moon shape with short narrow funnel necks and slighted everted thicker opening. The vases are decorated in splashed tenmoku brown glazes on a red brown glazed ground with a linear pattern running diagonally across the bodies. Both vases have impressed marks which we have been unable to identify, one with a series of collectors paper labels suggesting possible makers. However we have been unable to verify any of these. The dimensions provided are for the larger vase and the smaller example measures: height 16 cm, width 12.5 cm and depth 4.5 cm. Absolutely stunning display pieces...
