Large Early Masons Ironstone Jug or Pitcher Hand-Painted Butterflies, Circa 1825

This is a large ironstone jug or pitcher in the Hydra Shape with a rare pattern, made by Mason's, of Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, Circa 1825. The jug is octagonal with a good snake loop handle. The piece is richly hand-decorated in gold (gilt) floral sprigs or posies over a rich cobalt mazarine blue ground. It is then hand-painted over glaze with butterflies in subtle colored enamels, with additional gilded detail to the rim and handle. This is a rare pattern and is known as the: Gold Posies, enameled butterflies pattern, as illustrated on a Mug on Page 194 of the book Mason's China and The Ironstone Wares, by Geoffrey Godden, published by The Antique Collectors Club. This is a heavy large jug of about 1.25Kg unpacked, which is indicative of the earliest pieces. It is unmarked to the base as is often the case with Mason's early work.
