Large Hand Painted Japanese Charger

About the Item

This very large Japanese hand painted blue and white charger is a testament to the skills of its potter, because to throw and successfully fire such a large item is rather unusual. It has a diameter of 540 mm (21.25 inches), stands 78 mm (3 inches) high, and weighs 5 kg (11 lbs). The hand painted decoration features three cartouches, one of which shows a flock of cranes flying over a pine tree with Mt Fuji in the background, another, a robin on a branch near a chrysanthemum, and lastly a rural scene of a house near a waterfall. Interlaced between the cartouches are flowers and a diaper border to the rim. On the back a circle of stylised branches support robins, and there is a ring of scales around the footrim. A wonderful display piece, this would have taken pride of place in a late Victorian home, especially if the house was decorated in the Aesthetic taste or even the Arts and Crafts style. It could be displayed on a Stand, on the wall or in the centre of a table or sideboard. There are a few small spots on the glaze where frit from the kiln has settled, but they are not particularly noticeable. Otherwise it is in excellent condition. It would date from around 1880.
