Large-Scale Glazed Stoneware Vessel by Contemporary Ceramist Ebitenyefa Baralaye

About the Item

Large-scale, hand-formed stoneware double-handled vessel (or jug) from the studio of contemporary ceramicist Ebitenyefa Baralaye. This massively sized decorative jug stands 31" inches in height and measures 14" inches in diameter. The surface is drenched in a mottled-beige/tan glaze with cloudy black runs descending from the shoulder, an opaque black on the base, and a deeply corded texture throughout. Two ornamental strapwork handles adorn the upper portion of the ovoid-shaped vessel, which feature a distinctive inscription stating: "There Must Be A Place", which is also the title of the piece. About the Artist: Ebitenyefa Baralaye is a ceramicist, sculptor, and designer. His work explores cultural, spiritual, and material translations of objects, text, and symbols interpreted through a diaspora lens and abstracted around the aesthetics of craft and design. Baralaye received a BFA in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in ceramics from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Baralaye was an AICAD Teaching Fellow at the San Francisco Art Institute from 2016 to 2018. His work is featured in the “Objects: USA 2020” exhibition and catalog. He is currently an assistant professor and the Section Head of Ceramics at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI.
