Majolica Pot with Ram's Heads by Minton

A magnificent Majolica jardiniere with undertray by the celebrated pottery firm, Minton, featuring a lovely robin's egg blue exterior on a spirally fluted, tapered body, the top edge with an egg-and-dart pattern in blue, yellow gold and white, the bottom edge with a garland design of laurel leaves and ribbon in green and mauve. With opposing relief handles, each a finely modelled ram's-head. Resting on a round fluted undertray with a matching egg-and-dart pattern around the circumference. Impressed marks on the bottom: April 1873. A similar jardiniere is pictured on page 13 of Majolica, a complete history and illustrated survey by Marilyn G. Karmason and Joan B. Stacke. The style is described as Minton Renaissance on page 39 of the same book. Items displaying this style are considered important works by the company that first produced what is now known to collectors as Majolica. They are variations of a design by Baron Carlo Marochetti (1805-1868), an Italian sculptor who moved to London in 1848 and modelled these designs for Minton. Perfect for a garden room or conservatory!
