About the Item
This is a very good Ironstone hydra jug or pitcher in the jardinière pattern and made by Mason's Ironstone, England, circa 1870.
The pattern is a known Mason's chinoiserie pattern called "Jardinière", featuring an octagonal flower box with a large floral stem and apple shape growing from it. The apple contains an outline of a two storey Chinese house, all decorated in bold enamels with good additional gilded detail. The pattern would have been transfer printed then hand enameled and gilded.
This is a very decorative and collectable pattern and is fully documented and illustrated on Page 146 of "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, circa 1813-1848", published by The Mason's Collectors' Club.
The base carries the blue printed Rectangular crown Mason's mark with painters marks hand written in red, all dating this piece to the 19th century, circa 1870.
