About the Item

Rarely ewer in mixed clay from the Orleans factory of Grammont Ainé(1764-1832) End of the 18th century, around 1790 Very beautiful & rare zoomorphic ewer in earthenware mixed with the appearance of marble covered with translucent enamel with green reflections. Very finely worked swan handle. The body with Greek frieze on a gadrooned background on a pedestal. The collar with a hectic edge above water leaves. Certainly, one of the finest pieces from the factory of Alexandre Grammont (1790-1815) in Orléans. Height : 11 in (28 cm) Exceptional condition for an article of this period with only 2 tiny small defects at the base and at the collar. No restoration, no crack. (A copy of this ewer was presented at auction at Maître Pescheteau-Badin in Paris in 2011 with restorations to the neck and the handle) A bit of history on fine sandstones: Many cities throughout France have produced ceramics. Orléans, thanks to its many forests and very clayey soils, has always been an important place of pottery production from ancient times to today. The production of more elaborate ceramics began in 1753 with the creation of the "Manufacture Royale de terre blanche" which produced fine earthenware, soft porcelain and hard porcelain until its closure in 1784. With the success of fine stoneware and paste-on-paste from Wedgwood, certain French factories produced fine marbled stoneware: Douai, Anduze, Avignon and above all Apt, but also Orléans from 1794 to 1816. The Grammont family gave Orléans several generations of potters or master potters from the 1780s until the beginning of the 20th century. The fine earthenware with mixed earths called "marbled or marbled or agatized paste" created by Pierre-Alexandre Machard-Grammont aka "Grammont l'Ainé" (1764-1832) are certainly their greatest success and this ewer, reproduced on page 273 in the he work "Faience fine" by Christian Maire is one of the most refined pieces of their production.
