About the Item
French glazed earthenware bowl in the manner of Bernard Palissy.
Bernard Palissy (1510-1590) was a French potter who created extravagant glazes on his rustic ceramics which often featured naturalistic forms and creatures. He prepared a plan for a grotto in the Palace of the Tuileries in Paris for Catherine de' Medici where recently 5000 remnants of works by him were unearthed. Often imitated by followers in England, Holland and France over the next 300 years, original pieces are rare and difficult to attribute to him. None were signed and his inventiveness and constant movement meant he seldom produced multiples of his own work.
This lead-glazed earthenware dish is decorated with winged putti and a strap work motif enflaming each of the five hollows intended for the presentation of spices. Palissy's interest in strong, rich colors is evident here with green, blue and purplish brown with creamy white reserved for the relief figures of the putti. The dappled, mottled colors give the impression of tortoiseshell or even the illusion of pebbles under running water. Palissy was primarily a colorist in glazes more than a potter or ceramicist.
Similar examples are in the collection the LACMA (Los Angeles) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) from which a black and white photograph of the catalog entry is included here.
