About the Item
This is a 19th Century Majolica oval dish or small platter by George Jones, fully marked and dating to the Victorian English period 1861 to 1878.
This is a small oval majolica dish on a raised foot, by George Jones and is a very good example of its type with a multi coloured mottled centre surrounded by a leaf and acorn raised moulded decoration, with a yellow outer border at the rim. The mottled colours are very deep and rich with green, yellow and aubergine all in various shades
The reverse is mottled as per the front centre, with an applied pad mark displaying the GJ monogram, the words "Stoke on Trent' and the shape number, a mark used until 1878.
Overall a beautiful piece of George Jones Majolica.
George Jones:
"George Jones was born in 1823, working as an apprentice in the Minton factory during the 1830's. From 1844 to 1862 he worked as an independent pottery wholesaler and in 1862, he opened his first pottery, initially producing cream ware and toilet items. A fire in early 1866 destroyed this pottery and Jones rebuilt and created a larger pottery called the" Trent pottery", where he started making majolica products, in direct competition with Minton and Wedgwood. By 1870 the majolica produced by Jones soon developed a reputation for quality and is fully recognised today where it is highly collected.
Majolica is a type of pottery that is characterized by its brightly colored glazes and highly detailed molded designs.
